The Very Special Big Day

One morning, Blobbo woke up and felt hungry. That was no surprise because Blobbo was always hungry.

Blobbo yawned and stretched as much as a wobbly blue, ball-shaped Ogglebog can stretch.

Blobbo yawns and strecthes in bed.

But it was very quiet. Blobbo had never heard such quiet. Well, of course you can’t actually hear quiet. But you do know it's quiet when you can’t hear a single sound.

Blobbo boinged out of bed, pulled open the curtains and got a real surprise.

“What on Ogg is that?” thought Blobbo, staring out of the window.

On Planet Ogg, the weather is usually sunny. It doesn’t often rain. But when it does rain, it comes down in tiny, pink drops. The drops make little bang noises and let out puffs of smoke when they hit the ground.

This morning, there were no pink raindrops. The sun shone down as usual. But all the trees, hills and funny, little houses were covered in what looked like a white, fluffy blanket.

Blobbo went outside and thought, “Everything is quiet.” Then he thought, “Oooooh, it's cold!”

And then, just like that, Blobbo disappeared!

“Oh no! What’s happened? I’ve sunk down deep in this cold, white stuff. I’m stuck here and I haven’t had any breakfast yet!” yelled Blobbo in a muffled voice. “Help, help!”

Very soon, Rocco, Coco, Oddo, Beepo and Twinko came out of their houses. They all wondered what the white stuff was.

“It’s cold,” said Rocco.

“And very white,” said Coco.

“What can it be?” asked Twinko.

“Bzzz, bzzzz, bzz,” said Beepo.

“Yes, Beepo. I’m sure it must be called something,” said Rocco.

“Can you pick me up, please, Rocco?” asked Oddo, “I’m getting very cold in my underneaths.”

Rocco picked up Oddo.

“Thank you for carrying me,” said Oddo to Rocco.

“That’s what friends are for,” said Rocco, with a big smile. “No one wants frozen underneaths!”

Twinko carries Oddo above their head.

Suddenly everyone heard a noise.

“Help!” yelled Blobbo.

“There’s a Blobbo voice coming from somewhere near here,” said Rocco.

“It does sound quite like Blobbo,” said Twinko.

“Definitely a Blobbo voice,” said Coco.

“Help!” yelled Blobbo.

“I wonder where Blobbo is,” said Rocco.

“Bzzz, bzzzz, bzz,” said Beepo.

“Do you mean down there, Beepo?” asked Oddo.

“Help!” yelled Blobbo.

“Bzzz, bzzzz, bzz,” said Beepo.

They all went over and saw poor, old Blobbo down a deep, white hole.

“We had better pull Blobbo out,” said Coco.

They all reached down and grabbed hold of their big, blue friend.

“Let’s pull!” said Twinko.

Rocco said, “All together, now. One, two, three.

The Ogglebogs all pull Blobbo out of a pile of snow.

And they pulled Blobbo back onto the crispy, cold, white ground.

“What would I do without my best Ogglebog friends around, eh?” asked Blobbo. “Thank you, everyone. Oooooh, this white stuff is very deep right here. I’m hungry and cold, so shall we get breakfast?”

“We can’t go up Bubble Mountain with this deep, white stuff all over the place,” said Rocco. “What are we going to do?”

“Oh, dear me! If I got stuck,” said Oddo, “my underneaths would freeze.”

“Look, over there!” said Twinko.

They saw what looked like a great, big carrot standing upright on the ground. It was a space rocket.

“It’s Splish and Splosh!” said Coco.

“Yippee!” said Oddo.

They went over to the rocket just as the doors opened. There stood their two little friends from Planet Flurp.

Twinko went over to them and said, “Plip, plurp, foop, greeple?”

Splish said, “Plerk!”

Splish and Splash making a snowman next to their rocket. Twinko stands watching.

“What did Splish say, Twinko?” asked Rocco.

“Splish said they will fly us up Bubble Mountain to the Oggle Café so we can all have breakfast,” said Twinko. “And that they will fly us anywhere we want today!”

“Splish said all that by saying, ‘plerk’?” asked Rocco, a bit surprised.

“Thank goodness for that,” said Blobbo. “I thought I’d never have any breakfast ever again!”

They all got into the rocket and off they zoomed, up and up and up.

From the rocket’s window, Rocco, Coco, Oddo, Beepo, Twinko and Blobbo looked down below. They could see the tops of their funny, little houses. Everything was covered in a blanket of white.

The red rocket flying over the houses covered in snow.

“Now we are flying over the Mushmallow Forest!” said Blobbo.

“I don’t suppose the Riplats like that cold, white stuff,” said Twinko.

Then they saw Bubble Mountain in the distance.

“It’s covered in the white stuff, the same as everywhere else,” said Coco.

Soon they landed right outside the Oggle Café.

They all went in. Pasto the Baker was very surprised to see the Ogglebog friends as well as Splish and Splosh.

“I didn’t think anyone was going to come into the café today,” said Pasto, “what with all this snow on the ground.”

“Snow?” asked Blobbo.

“What?” asked Twinko.

“Never heard of it,” said Oddo and Coco together.

“Bzzz, bzzzz, bzz,” said Beepo.

“Oh, you see, there’s a very special day that comes around. A big day. And the day before that special, big day, snow falls and covers Ogg,” said Pasto. “And that day is… today!”

Pasto hugs Oddo and Coco. A speech bubble of the planet covered in snow.

“That means the special, big day is tomorrow!” said Blobbo.

“But what is snow?” asked Rocco.

“It’s frozen water,” said Pasto, “that comes down from the sky in tiny, little flakes.”

“How strange,” muttered Coco.

“Odd,” muttered Oddo.

“But what in blazing bananas is this special, big day?” asked Rocco.

“Yes, what’s it all about?” asked Blobbo. “Are there lots of Ogglecakes to eat?”

“Oh, there are lots of good things to eat on this special, big day: Ogglecakes, floaty pies…”

“Oh, I love floaty pies!” said Blobbo.

“Me too!” said Twinko.

“…and opples, plims and dotes,” Pasto continued. “But you know the best part of the day?”

“Even better than floaty pies?” asked Blobbo.

“Yes,” said Pasto. “The very best part of the day is having all your friends and family together and giving them presents. They might even give you presents too!”

All the Ogglebogs had big smiles on their faces as they thought about the exciting day ahead.

The Ogglebogs sat at the Oggcafe table thinking about presents.

“Bzzz, bzzzz, bzz,” said Beepo.

“Of course, Beepo. We’ll have to give out invitations!” said Twinko.

“Where will this special, big day take place?” asked Rocco.

“Why, here of course!” said Pasto.

“And after breakfast, we can all go to the WhimWhams toy shop to get presents for everyone!” said Coco.

“Yes!” said Twinko.

“We’ll get a big present for Pasto for making our lovely, delicious Ogglecakes all year round,” whispered Blobbo to Rocco.

“Bzzz, bzzzz, bzz,” said Beepo.

“Perfect idea, Beepo,” said Oddo. “We can invite the WhimWhams from the toy shop; Twinko’s Uncle Buncle; Blobbo’s Auntie Blibbo; Splish and Splosh, of course; and even naughty, old Frimble-Bop, the Ogg Dog!”

Everyone around a Christmas tree.

The Ogglebogs were so excited. They talked to each other about the fun they were going to have the next day.

Then Blobbo asked, “But what’s this special, big day called?”

Pasto answered, “Oh, it’s called…”

Suddenly they all saw something fly slowly past the café window.

When, what to the Ogglebog eyes should appear

But a little, red sleigh and eight tiny reindeer?

The driver’s eyes twinkled, his face was so merry.

His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

He was bearded and plump: a jolly, old fellow.

They heard him yell out with a great, big bellow

Just as the red sleigh drove out of sight,

"Happy Oggsmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

And, you know what? The very next day was Oggsmas Day.

Father Christmas riding in his sleigh flies over the house.

Happy Oggsmas, everyone!
